US Credit Card for Your Own US LLC 2026: The Realistic Roadmap for Non-US Citizens

A business account with Mercury, Wise or Relay is not enough for a classic US business credit card. Rewards programmes, high limits and a real US credit score depend on personal creditworthiness – which non-US citizens first have to build. Part 7 of our series on US company formation, including an important correction on Amex Global Transfer.

US credit card for your own US LLC 2026 – the realistic roadmap for non-US citizens
Key takeaways
  • ✛Only a real credit card reporting to Experian, Equifax and TransUnion builds a US credit score.
  • ✛US lending is based on personal creditworthiness – the LLC alone is not enough.
  • ✛Germany and Austria are not on Amex Global Transfer's confirmed core list.
  • ✛A US Amex opened without an ITIN usually does not build an official score.
  • ✛US business cards almost always require a personal guarantee.

Debit vs. credit card: why the difference matters

A debit card, as issued by neobanks to US LLCs by default (Mercury, Wise, Relay, Payoneer), deducts every purchase immediately from the balance. A real credit card grants a credit line and is settled at the end of the month.

The decisive difference: only a real credit card that reports to the three US credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion) builds a US credit score – the basis for higher limits, financing and the trust of US banks.

Important

Bank products, lending policies and programme rules change frequently. Verify every step directly with the provider.

Why the LLC alone does not get you a US credit card

US lending is based almost exclusively on personal creditworthiness, not on the existence of a company. Without an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) or SSN, as a non-US citizen you have no US credit score – and without one, neither American Express nor Chase will issue a business credit card to your LLC, even if the company is properly structured and generating revenue.

Neobanks such as Mercury or Wise provide a working business account, but they are not full banks with their own lending and contribute nothing to building a score.

Amex Global Transfer: what is true – and what is not

The American Express programme is now officially called «Global Card Relationship» (formerly Global Transfer). The basic idea is correct: anyone who has held a card issued directly by American Express in an eligible country for at least three months (six to twelve recommended) can apply for a US Amex – verified by passport instead of SSN or ITIN.

First: the country list is narrower than often claimed

For the «no credit history» path, American Express currently confirms countries including Australia, Brazil, Canada, the Dominican Republic, India, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria and the United Kingdom. Germany and Austria are not on this core list. This does not necessarily mean a German or Austrian Amex is unsuitable – practice varies. Eligibility should, however, be confirmed by phone with American Express beforehand.

Second: no ITIN, no official score

A US Amex opened without an ITIN or SSN usually builds no credit score reported to the three bureaus, only an internal history with American Express. Linking it later to an ITIN is, according to consistent reports, usually not possible. Building a score requires a separate, second card application with the ITIN on file.

The actual roadmap to a US credit score

  1. 1Optional door-opener: convert an existing Amex into a US card via Global Card Relationship – this gives you a first US card and a «Member Since» date, but no official score yet.
  2. 2Apply for an ITIN – in parallel or immediately afterwards, via a certified Acceptance Agent, without sending your passport to the IRS.
  3. 3Apply for a second US credit card with the ITIN on file – only this card reports to the three bureaus.
  4. 4Wait for six to twelve months of on-time payments until a first FICO score appears; a score of around 690+ suitable for business cards realistically takes a year or more.
  5. 5Only then apply for a US business credit card for the LLC (e.g. Amex Business Gold, Chase Ink Business Preferred) – regularly with a personal guarantee.

Requirements for a real US business credit card

  • ✛An ITIN as personal tax identification
  • ✛Your LLC's EIN (applied for at formation)
  • ✛An account with a US full-service bank, not just a neobank
  • ✛Basic LLC data: name, formation date, US address, contact person
  • ✛A plausible revenue estimate
  • ✛A personal credit score – often cited benchmark around 690, varying by issuer
  • ✛A US address for card delivery – PO boxes and many mail-forwarding addresses are rejected; a real delivery address is more reliable
Amex Global Transfer – why it alone does not build a US credit score

US full-service bank account: what it realistically takes

Without an account at a US full-service bank (e.g. JPMorgan Chase), access to classic business credit cards remains limited. Requirements differ by access route:

  • ✛Remote opening: possible at some institutions, but often tied to much higher minimum deposits and private banking programmes.
  • ✛Opening in person: usually lower minimum deposits, but physical presence and identification at a branch are required.

Minimum deposits and programmes change constantly and vary by branch – verify specific figures directly with the bank before planning a trip or a capital transfer.

CRS, FATCA and the reality of «discretion»

The US does not participate in the OECD's automatic exchange of information (CRS). US accounts are therefore not reported to foreign tax authorities via the CRS mechanism – a real, structural difference from the CRS network.

Important

This does not change your filing obligation in your country of residence. The lack of automatic reporting merely reduces the risk of detection – it does not make non-declaration lawful. Reporting obligations such as Form 5472 also remain unaffected.

How SWICOR supports you

We lay the foundation for your US financial profile: a properly structured LLC with a correctly obtained EIN, the right documents for account opening and an assessment of which route to a personal US credit score – Global Card Relationship, first ITIN application or secured card – fits your situation. Conclusion

  • ✛A US LLC alone does not get you a US business credit card – your personal score is decisive, and it requires an ITIN.
  • ✛Global Card Relationship is a useful building block, but with a narrower country list (confirm DE/AT beforehand) and usually no official score without an ITIN.
  • ✛The route to a robust score runs via an ITIN and a second, linked card – realistically six to twelve months or more.
  • ✛US business cards almost always require a personal guarantee.
  • ✛The US not participating in CRS does not release you from your filing obligation.

Frequently asked questions

Is my US LLC alone enough for a US credit card?

No. US card issuers primarily assess your personal creditworthiness. Without an ITIN and an established US credit score, there is no real business credit card, even with an LLC.

Can I convert my German Amex into a US card via Global Transfer?

Possibly, but not guaranteed: Germany and Austria are not on the confirmed core list for the «no credit history» path. Clarify eligibility directly with American Express beforehand.

Does a card opened via Global Transfer build my US credit score?

Usually not. Without an ITIN on file, the card generally only reports internally to American Express. For a real score you need an ITIN and a second, linked card.

How long does it take to build a usable US credit score?

A first FICO score appears after about six months of card history at the earliest; a score suitable for business cards usually takes a year or longer.

Is my LLC or am I personally liable for the business credit card?

As a rule, you personally: US business credit cards are almost always issued with a personal guarantee – regardless of the LLC's limited liability.

Are my US accounts automatically reported to my tax office?

Usually not via the CRS mechanism, as the US does not participate. Your own filing obligation in your country of residence remains.
