Verifying Your US LLC's Trading Address at Wise: The Current Guide 2026
Anyone running a US LLC through Wise Business increasingly has to prove a real, physical trading address – not just the registered agent address. Since Wise started offering physical debit cards in the US, KYC/KYB checks have become stricter. Part 8 of our series on US company formation: what Wise requires, which documents count and where the tax trap lies.

- ✛Registered agent address and trading address are two different things – Wise only accepts a real trading address.
- ✛Since introducing physical US debit cards, Wise checks more strictly.
- ✛Addresses in countries on the EU list of non-cooperative jurisdictions are frequently rejected.
- ✛Your private home address can create a permanent establishment in your country of residence.
- ✛Six types of proof are possible, from utility bills to insurance policies.
Registered address vs. trading address
Two addresses are often confused with a US LLC:
- ✛Registered address (registered agent address): the official address under which the LLC is registered in the state. It serves formal purposes such as receiving official mail and is not accepted by Wise as a trading address.
- ✛Trading address: the actual physical place from which the business is run – an office, coworking space or other real business premises. Wise does not accept virtual addresses, mail forwarding, PO boxes or registered agent addresses.
Account requirements of fintech providers change frequently. Verify the specific requirements in the Wise portal or with support.
Why Wise imposes this requirement
In the US, Wise is regulated as a money service business (not a bank) and subject to anti-money-laundering due diligence. A verifiable trading address shows where a company actually operates – a standard KYC/KYB element that has been handled noticeably more strictly since physical Wise debit cards launched in the US than in 2023/2024.
This mainly affects accounts of non-US residents with a US LLC, where Wise checks more closely whether the address reflects a real business operation.
Which countries are problematic: the EU list
Wise rejects trading addresses particularly often in countries on the EU list of non-cooperative jurisdictions for tax purposes. The list is updated twice a year (February and October). After the update of 17 February 2026, it comprises ten jurisdictions:
American Samoa, Anguilla, Guam, Palau, Panama, Russia, Turks and Caicos Islands, US Virgin Islands, Vanuatu and Vietnam.
Fiji, Samoa and Trinidad and Tobago were removed; the Turks and Caicos Islands and Vietnam were added. Panama – a frequently reported rejection example – remains on the list. Check the current version directly with the Council of the EU before any decision.
The safest choice are countries where Wise offers regular business and personal accounts, such as the US, Germany, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Canada and Australia. For a US LLC, a US trading address is usually the most consistent choice.
The underestimated danger: permanent establishment risk
Using a utility bill, lease or other document showing your private home address in your country of residence as the LLC's trading address carries a real tax risk. Management carried out permanently from there can create a permanent establishment or place of management in your country of residence – with the result that the LLC's income may become taxable there, regardless of its formal US seat.
Only accept this link consciously and with an understanding of the permanent establishment definition – see our article on the permanent representative and place of management. When in doubt, a real US address is the lower-risk choice.
Accepted proof in detail
According to current information, Wise accepts the following proof, among others – exact requirements may change:
| Proof | Requirements |
|---|---|
| Utility bill | Issued to the LLC (gas, electricity, water, internet), max. three months old; mobile phone bills do not count |
| Lease agreement | In the LLC's name, address exactly as entered at Wise, visible signatures; some virtual offices issue official leases |
| Statement from another business account | Showing LLC name and trading address, max. three months old; not addressed to the registered agent |
| Business licence / EIN confirmation | Business licence or IRS EIN confirmation letter, max. one year old; request again via Form 147C if lost |
| Tax documents | Tax assessments, returns, IRS correspondence with the LLC address – less practical for many sole entrepreneurs |
| Insurance policy | General or professional liability in the LLC's name showing the trading address – often available at low annual premiums |
When Wise no longer fits: alternatives
Reports from 2025/2026 suggest that Wise is reviewing foreign single members of US LLCs increasingly restrictively. Anyone with persistent difficulties should consider alternatives in parallel – such as Mercury, Relay, Payoneer or Airwallex. Each provider has its own, also changing requirements regarding address, industry and digital presence. Do not depend on a single fintech.

Frequently asked questions
Is my registered agent address enough as a trading address at Wise?
No. Wise requires a separate, actual physical trading address.
Which countries does Wise reject particularly often?
Mainly countries on the EU list of non-cooperative jurisdictions – as of February 2026 including Panama, Vanuatu and Russia. The list will be updated again in October 2026.
Can I use my private home address abroad as trading address?
Often technically possible, but a tax risk: it can create a permanent establishment or place of management in your country of residence.
What if I cannot get a utility bill in the LLC's name?
Alternatives include a lease in the LLC's name, a statement from another business account, the IRS EIN confirmation letter (via Form 147C if needed) or an insurance policy issued to the LLC.
What if Wise permanently rejects my address?
Consider alternatives such as Mercury, Relay, Payoneer or Airwallex – and avoid depending on a single fintech account.
